Shelter environments can be incredibly tough on bigger dogs trying to find a permanent home. However, an Oregon rescue group is launching a big summer push to change those odds.

As reported by Springfield BottomLine, the Greenhill Humane Society just kicked off its “More to Love” initiative to get larger dogs adopted much faster. Running from June 1 through August 31, this special campaign focuses entirely on reducing adoption barriers.

It turns out big canines wait around way longer than smaller pups. Now, thanks to new funding and a tailored adoption program, the shelter is hoping more of those dogs will finally get their chance.

Shelter announces new campaign for large dogs to get adopted faster

National data shows a pretty heartbreaking trend for bigger animals. According to a 2026 report from Hill’s Pet Nutrition, big pups make up 26% of shelter intakes. However, they endure the longest stays.

In fact, a large dog spends about 70% more time waiting in a shelter compared to smaller ones. The reason for this is that people often worry about space, physical handling, and the overall cost of feeding a bigger pet.

The local situation in Lane County is actually even more serious than the national average. Around 55% of the animals entering Greenhill weigh 44 pounds or more. Even universally loved large breeds like Labradors or German Shepherds can get stuck waiting behind kennel doors for months.

Executive Director Cary Lieberman, in an article on Kezi.com, said that their situation is actually more urgent. He explained that they want to get them adopted into loving homes much more quickly, and a generous grant from Hill’s Science Diet is making the whole thing possible.

To sweeten the deal, chosen pups are going home with entirely customized adoption packages. Every single bundle is tailored specifically to that animal’s exact needs. They might include custom-fitted harnesses, leash sets, and special training treats.

Plus, owners get cool enrichment tools like puzzle toys, slow feeders, and snuffle mats. It gives the new families everything they need for a totally seamless transition.

Big breed dogs of absolutely all ages are participating in the campaign right now. Anyone looking for a giant bundle of love can check out the available animals online.
