Being kind does not take much, but it can bring a smile almost immediately — as was the case with this shelter dog during her day out in @jsaraceno’s video on Instagram. In the video, Nina, the titular dog, goes through a striking transformation in the span of one afternoon.
It opens with the on-screen caption, “Shelter dog Nina before her day out,” as Nina lies curled up on a raised cot inside her kennel. Her eyes look heavy, and she looks small against the blank walls. But then things change.
Shelter dog’s mood instantly lights up after a day out and some love
The next scene in the video reads, “During her day out,” as the shelter dog sits in the back seat of a car, resting her tired face. She looks unsure, as if she is still processing the change in scenery. Then comes the final caption, “After her day out.” And it is like watching a different dog as Nina stands by the water with her tongue out and her eyes bright, staying close to the volunteer beside her. Her body finally relaxes, and she smiles.
Under the video, the creator wrote, “Nina was a different dog the second we left the shelter,” adding, “I’m so glad I got to see this other side to her,” and noting, “Adoptable at the Benton Franklin Humane Society in Kennewick, Washington.”
Viewers loved Nina and wished someone would adopt her. One commenter wrote, “She is beautiful and a sensitive soul,” while another commented, “I hope you get adopted.” A third one pleaded, “Give me the dog. Just please.”
The reason this shelter dog’s expressions change during the day out is that shelters, even the best ones, can be overwhelming with all kinds of sounds and smells that keep many dogs on edge. This can make some pups seem withdrawn or anxious. But once they step outside that environment, many dogs soften almost instantly — so Nina’s day out gave her a break from the constant overstimulation and helped her come out of her shell.
And somewhere out there, if the comments are any sign, her forever home may already be watching.
